La Forge is situated in the heart of a geological curiosity : the ochre sands in Rustrel.
The bright colors have given rise to the name of Provencal Colorado.
Ochre mining was an intense activity in the Apt area during several generations, and fashioned both the landscapes and the men who worked them.
The geological process leading to the formation of the ochre sands is also at the origin of the iron concentration in the surface rocks. This easily accessible ore stimulated several industrial adventure in the 19th century.
During this 5-hour hike, you will see for yourself all the landscapes that witness this human adventure that tells the saga of ochre and iron.
